IBASAM (Individual BAsed Salmon Model) is an individual-based demo-genetic model developed to simulate salmon population dynamics.

How does IBASAM work?

The basic time step for all individual processes is daily. IBASAM is made of 10 submodels representing fundamental biological processes :

  • Reproduction and redd creation
  • Emergence from the redds and individual birth
  • Genetic coding and transmission
  • Growth
  • Survival
  • Smoltification
  • Maturation
  • Migrations and dispersal
  • Movements within the river
  • Fishing

This version of IBASAM is spatially explicit, capable of simulating complex watersheds comprising multiple rivers and/or interconnected basins, as well as several marine regions. Rivers can be further subdivided into single or multiple reaches, separated by weirs with user-defined passability levels. Each reach, river and sea region are characterized by different features such as habitat area and environmental conditions (e.g., water temperature and flow, fishing rates, growth conditions).

For the sake of conciseness, all submodels are not extensively justified here. Please see Wiki and Piou et al. (2012) for further explanations and graphics of some of the mathematical functions used.

How to use IBASAM?

More detailed explanations are provided in the Wiki.

What is IBASAM’ goal?

IBASAM is a cohesive and novel tool to assess the effect of potential stressors on evolutionary demography of Atlantic salmon. It includes a demo-genetic structure coupled with the explicit representation of individual variability and complex life histories.

More detailed explanations (processes, installation procedure,…), are provided in the Wiki.
